A Commercial Pilot License (CPL)
entitles the holder to fly any single-engine, non-high performance land-based
aircraft - for hire. It's similar to the PPL in terms of extra endorsements
available for it - but now you can get paid for it all. As it requires a minimum of
200 hours of flying time, it automatically eliminates anyone but the most
ardent of aviators. Career pilots will typically choose this path.
Prerequisites:
1.
An applicant must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, or a person
lawfully admitted into Canada
for the purpose of flight training.
2.
An applicant must hold a valid Private Pilot License, issued in
Canada
or by a contracting state, prior to commencing Commercial training.

An applicant must be a minimum of 18 years of age for the issue of
the Commercial Pilot’s License.
Medical: An applicant must successfully complete a Category 1
Medical examination by a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner. The Category
1 Medical is not required in order to begin commercial training, but must be
in the student's possession prior to undergoing any flight tests or written
examinations.
Ground School:
A minimum of 40 hours of ground school instruction in 10 mandatory
subject areas is required prior to writing the Transport Canada Commercial Pilot
Exam. Written exams can be attempted after 100 hours flight time. Students
must obtain 60% overall on the exam.
Flight Training: The commercial course consists of 65 hours of
flight training. A minimum of 35 hours dual and 30 hours solo training
is also required. In order for the Commercial License to be issued an
applicant must have no less than 200 hours total time. At least 100 hours
must be Pilot In Command (PIC.), which must include 20 hours PIC cross
country time. The cost to reach these times will depend on the
applicant’s knowledge, as well as the total time since the Private License
was issued. Training times for endorsements such as night, instrument and
float ratings may be applied to the time requirements for this License.
