A Commercial Pilot License (CPL) entitles the holder to fly an aircraft - for hire. It's similar to the PPL in that you may add extra endorsements.  The commercial program is great way for someone just wishing to enhance his aviation knowledge and flying skills.

Prerequisites: An applicant must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, or a person lawfully admitted into Canada for the purpose of flight training. An applicant must hold a valid Private Pilot License, issued in Canada or by a contracting state, prior to commencing Commercial training. An applicant must be a minimum of 18 years of age for the issue of the Commercial Pilot’s License.

Medical: An applicant must successfully complete a Category 1 Medical examination by a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner.  The Category 1 Medical

  is not required in order to begin commercial training, but must be in the student's possession prior to undergoing any flight tests or written examinations.

Knowledge: A minimum of 80 hours of ground school instruction in 10 mandatory subject areas is required prior to writing the Transport Canada Commercial Pilot Exam. Written exams can be attempted after 100 hours flight time. Students must obtain 60% overall on the exam.

Experience: The commercial course consists of 65 hours of flight training.  A minimum of 35 hours dual and 30 hours solo training is also required.  In order for the Commercial License to be issued an applicant must have no less than 200 hours total time. At least 100 hours must be Pilot In Command (PIC.), which must include 20 hours PIC cross country time.  Training times for endorsements such as night, instrument and float ratings may be applied to the time requirements for this License.

Skill: Upon completion of the flight training the applicant must pass flight test conducted by a Transport Canada Designated Flight Test Examiner.
