An Instructor Rating allows the holder of a Commercial Pilot License to pass the skills and knowledge that they've acquired to others. The rating stresses the various teaching strategies that can be used in the pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight instruction of students.

Prerequisites: An applicant must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, or a person lawfully admitted into Canada for the purpose of flight training. An applicant must hold a valid Commercial Pilot License, issued in Canada or by a contracting state. An applicant must be a minimum of 18 years of age for the issue of the Commercial Pilot’s License.

Knowledge: A minimum of 25 hours of ground school instruction in 7 mandatory subject areas is required prior to writing the Transport Canada Class IV Instructor

Rating Exam. Students must obtain 70% overall on the exam. Topics covered include principles of learning, techniques of instruction and use of lesson plans. Presentation of lesson plans is covered in conjunction with flight training to simulate actual instruction. Flight training standards, regulations and processing requirements for various licenses and ratings are also addressed.

Experience: The Class IV Instructor Rating consists of 30 hours of dual flight time. The majority of the course is centered on learning the proper teaching techniques required for the Class IV Instructor Rating. The course starts with a right seat check-out, followed by a series of flights designed to cover each exercise. Student evaluation and trouble shooting techniques are also addressed.

Skill: Upon completion of the flight training the applicant must pass flight test conducted by a Transport Canada Designated Flight Test Examiner.
