An
Instructor Rating
allows the holder of a Commercial Pilot License to pass the skills and
knowledge that they've acquired to others. The rating stresses the various
teaching strategies that can be used in the pre-flight, in-flight and
post-flight instruction of students.
Prerequisites: An
applicant must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, or a person lawfully
admitted into Canada for
the purpose of flight training. An applicant
must hold a valid Commercial Pilot License, issued in Canada or by a
contracting state. An applicant must be a minimum of 18 years of age for the
issue of the Commercial Pilot’s License.
Knowledge: A minimum of 25 hours of ground school instruction in 7
mandatory subject areas is required prior to writing the Transport Canada
Class IV Instructor

Rating Exam. Students must obtain 70% overall on the exam. Topics covered
include principles of learning, techniques of instruction and use of lesson
plans. Presentation of lesson plans is covered in conjunction with flight
training to simulate actual instruction. Flight training standards,
regulations and processing requirements for various licenses and ratings are
also addressed.
Experience: The
Class IV Instructor Rating consists of 30 hours of dual flight time. The
majority of the course is centered on learning the proper teaching
techniques required for the Class IV Instructor Rating. The course starts
with a right seat check-out, followed by a series of flights designed to
cover each exercise. Student evaluation and trouble shooting techniques are
also addressed.
Skill: Upon completion of the flight training the applicant must pass
flight test conducted by a Transport Canada Designated Flight Test Examiner.
