Before you take your first solo flight you'll need a medical certificate issued by the Civil Aviation Medical Examiner (CAME) allowing you to fly.  You can start flying lessons without it, but before you solo, you will need it.

There are a number of different types of medical certificates - and the specific certificate you need depends on what license your going for. For example, a category 4 medical is required for the Recreational Pilot license and it can be authorized by your family doctor. For a Private Pilot's license a category 3 medical is required and for a Commercial license a category 1. These  medical certificates (1 & 3's), are only authorized by special doctors in the Kingston area trained in aviation medicine. The exam costs $145 (its not covered by OHIP), and the list of physicians who do this test are shown below.

In addition, medical certificates do expire. How long they're good for depends on what license you hold and your age. If you're under 40 years old, a "cat 3" medical will last you 5 years.
